Audi dream drives

A drive of a lifetime – Audi heads to Germany, Austria and Italy in the new Audi R8 Spyder for a drive not to be missed.

It’s the sort of drive that motoring daydreams are made of, but Audi is turning this one into a reality this year and the invitation is there to come along for the drive.

8 March, 2019

A picture they say, is worth a thousand words – so, picture this. You’re behind the wheel of the new Audi R8 V10 Spyder – think quattro permanent all-wheel drive, 419kW of power at 8100rpm, 560Nm of torque and 0 to 100km/h in 3.5 seconds*. Ahead of you is a ribbon of road, snaking its way up the side of a mountain in the Austrian Alps, heading for one of the famous alpine passes like Grosseglockner. The road is beckoning you, urging you to enjoy the car to the full as you immerse yourself in another day of perfect motoring on roads that were specially designed in heaven for this very purpose.

Now, snap out of it and ask yourself what you have planned for this June and if it compares to what you’ve just imagined, because this is exactly what a select group of Audi enthusiasts will be doing in a few months.

It’s a new driving program offered by the Audi driving experience that will see Audi Australia’s Chief Driving Instructor, Steve Pizzati, lead a group from Australia on a driving odyssey through Germany, Austria and Italy, taking in some of the most exciting and picturesque driving roads in Europe in the brand new Audi R8 Spyder – the perfect car to both enjoy the scenery and of course, the roads.

"...this trip offers a completely different driving and travelling experience, but still with the trademark Audi touches and of course the sublime R8 Spyder"

Think roads that are straight out of a Bond film or used to tantalise in exotic photoshoots – but that exist and beckon the motoring enthusiast to not just take them on, but revel in what motoring can be like far from the madding crowd and the crushing cut and thrust of he daily commute.

For those who’ve driven this spectacular part of the world, the idea of breathtaking mountain roads and high passes, picture postcard scenery and cool dark forests will instantly conjure fond memories, while for those motoring aficionados who’ve long dreamed of escaping into the perfect mountain motoring environment in the ultimate driver’s car – the reality is every bit as good as you’ve imagined.

“We take in some of the most spectacular and engaging roads in Europe,” says Pizzati, who also leads Audi driving experience trips to Europe each year to Audi’s Ice Driving schools in both Seefeld (Audi Ice Driving Experience – Austria) and the Audi Ice Driving Experience Pro in Sweden.

“But not everyone is attracted to driving in the winter or on ice and snow,” he says, “so this trip offers a completely different driving and travelling experience, but still with the trademark Audi touches and of course the sublime R8 Spyder.”

The trip will see participants make their way to Munich in mid-June, where the group will meet up and get their first taste of serious motoring with a trip to the Audi driving experience centre at Neuburg – not far from Audi’s head office in Ingolstadt. Here, the fun begins, with driver training to get participants used to the cars and to help sharpen up their skills on the purpose-built facility that is also home to all of Audi Sport’s racing endeavours. This in itself is an experience, just some of the brand’s many motorsport trophies on display bringing home the rich performance and racing heritage at the very heart of the brand.

Suitably acclimatised after a day with Steve Pizzati and some of Audi’s expert driving instructors on the expansive Neuburg layout, and it’s time to head for the hills, so to speak, embarking on an immersive driving experience through Europe.

Of course, quite aside from the captivating vistas and roads seemingly created just for this purpose, the entire trip – a day of driver training at Neuburg and four days of touring – is all executed with Audi’s customary flair. Outstanding accommodation and fine fare are all part of the program as you would expect, making for a trip that will long live in the memory.

There is simply nothing like this in Australia, and with the high Alpine passes reopening in May from their winter closures, a driving trip on these legendary roads in June is the perfect time to enjoy the crisp spring weather and soak up the dazzling views as you realise a motoring dream.

Of course this is not a race, but rather a led driving experience ensuring all participants get the most from the trip. Given the Spyder’s two-seat sports configuration, this is the perfect trip for couples, family members or friends to enjoy, driving two-up in the R8s and then luxuriating in the magnificent twin-share accommodation each evening.

Certainly a motoring trip of a lifetime, not to mention the perfect way to escape the miserable depths of the Australian winter, this is one that no motoring enthusiast should miss.
