Audi’s versatile all-terrain model, the A4 allroad quattro along with the A6 quattro has dominated the All-wheel Drive Car of 2016 awards run by celebrated European title Auto Bild Allrad
Readers voted on the list of nominees with the two Audis completely dominating their respective classes. The A4 allroad quattro taking the coveted All-wheel Crossover category with 17.4 percent of all votes across a total of 10 categories while the Audi A6 quattro was awarded the title of All-wheel Car over 40,000 Euros (A6 quattro sedan pictured below).
Speaking at the award ceremony held in Stuttgart, Dr. Stefan Knirsch, Board Member for Technical Development at AUDI AG said “The double win represents the success story of the quattro drive system and the power of the all-road models – our all-rounder with off-road qualities.”
Both the Audi A4 and A6 allroad quattro models have enjoyed tremendous success in Australia since the first model was released some 16 years ago. With the new A4 allroad quattro confirmed for Australian release later this year, there is considerable interest already, particularly given the introduction of the new quattro drive with ultra technology which will see significant gains in efficiency through an exciting new development in Audi’s famous quattro technology.
This new incarnation of quattro will make its debut in the new A4 allroad quattro 2.0 TFSI and takes Audi’s famous quattro drive to a new level. It works by allowing the vehicle to switch seamlessly between front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive as required by the road surface and the driver’s own driving style.
Put simply, in suitable conditions, two clutches deactivate the prop shaft and rear axle from the drivetrain, leaving the allroad quattro with all of the fuel savings of driving through the front wheels only. But a highly sophisticated and extensive set of sensors continually monitor a range of ever-changing factors including road conditions and wheel traction, ensuring that all-wheel drive is activated in an instant as soon as the road and driving conditions dictate. This translates to tremendous fuel savings without compromising the A4 allroad’s ‘go anywhere’ abilities and without the driver even being aware of the switch in drive.
