Count down Nurburgring

Audi teams set to do battle at the Nürburgring classic.

Possibly the most challenging race track on earth, the Nürburgring is promising to add bad weather to its already extensive list of challenges for drivers in this weekend’s Nürburgring 24 Hour Race.

28 May, 2016

With qualifying complete for this weekend’s race, all six Audi Sport customer teams are ready to race, along with two Audi race experience entries, all having qualified to take on the gruelling Nürburgring 24 Hours.
Two Audi R8 LMS cars sit in the top 10 positions, with strong drives in trying conditions from Frank Stippler in the Phoenix Racing entry and Dutch driver, Robin Frijns in the Belgian Audi Club Team WRT car. Their efforts on a wet track saw them secure fifth and 10th position respectively for the race around the torturous 25.387 kilometre circuit that has earned the nickname the Green Hell.
The Audi contingent looks strong, with many seasoned drivers and team combinations looking to build on the brand’s record in this demanding race.
Rene Rast, who drove in Australia at the start of the year in the Bathurst 12 hour Race will be looking to another victory here this year, his qualifying run seeing him set to start in 16th position on the grid. Pierre Kaffer in another Audi Sport Team WRT car has claimed the 22nd spot after being slowed by a puncture, while Marc Basseng – another Audi driver who has raced at Bathurst – will start just behind Kaffer in 25th position.
“The six teams from Audi Sport customer racing thoroughly geared up for the challenges,” says Chris Reinke, Head of Audi Sport customer racing.
But they will be up against more than the challenges of the track and a strong field of challengers, with heavy rain forecast throughout the race to add another dimension of difficulty.
Having claimed the race in 2012, 2014 and again last year, Audi will be looking to continue what has been a dominant performance at the world’s most demanding track. The race will be live streamed on www.audi-motorsport.com where race fans can get a genuine feel for the action with in-car footage of several of the Audi Sport customer teams. Racing commencing at 15:00 hours (Central European Summertime).
