A thrilling race weekend at Victoria’s Sandown Raceway has seen Audi clinch its third Australia GT title, with Geoff Emery taking first, second and fifth in the three races over the weekend in his Team Valvoline Jamec Pem R8 LMS.

Geoff joins Mark Eddy (2011) and Christopher Mies (2015) as title holder driving an R8 LMS in the championship.

A close season of racing as always saw Emery consistently in the points, but going into Sandown it was pretty much neck in neck between Emery and Ash Walsh in the Supabarn Supermarkets R8 LMS, who could also have taken the title outright.

Emery’s ultimate performance, with a win, a podium and a fifth was more than enough to clinch it, no small feat in itself, but extraordinary given that this time last year Emery was recovering from a fractured vertebra suffered in a crash at Barbagallo Raceway.

The injury saw Emery out of the car and in rehab for 10 months, following surgery to repair the damage and insert a metal plate in his back.

Emery had to effectively learn to walk all over again, so his comeback is nothing short of extraordinary – his championship win, very much icing on the cake.

Teammate, Steve McLaughlin, also had a successful weekend, finishing second in race two while Ash Walsh and Duvashen Padayachee from Team Supabarn Supermarkets achieved third place in race three.
