Frontline at Le Mans

Meet the people at the forefront of Audi’s 2016 Le Mans campaign.

To win at Le Mans requires an enormous team effort and Audi has proved again and again that it has the team to do the job. But at the ‘sharp end’ of the campaign, it is a select few who are quite literally behind the wheel.

Two cars, six drivers and one of the most revered support teams in modern motorsport. Audi will look to achieve its 14th victory at the famed Circuit de la Sarthe with a well-oiled outfit that sets the standard in the modern era.

The team of six race drivers includes four Le Mans winners as well as a reserve driver (Rene Rast) should the need arise, driving two R18 e-tron quattros – the same number of cars as sister brand Porsche – for this year’s race.

Leading Audi’s charge as always is the giant talent of Dr Wolfgang Ullrich, Head of Audi Motorsport and an undisputed genius in the world of motorsport. His experience, judgement and passion have been instrumental in the brand’s success not only in the the World Endurance Championship (WEC) but in all fields of motorsport for many years.

The record of the drivers is no less impressive, the team boasting four Le Mans victories and two world championship titles among them, as well as individual motorsport achievements that place them at the very top of the sport internationally.

“We have two strong driver squads on the grid. They have been proving their prowess with Audi for many years,” says Dr Ullrich. “Our drivers respect and drive each other to top performances.”

The individual as well as the combined tallies of the careers leave no doubt that the

Audi drivers rank among the world’s best.

Marcel Fässler, André Lotterer and Benoît Tréluyer have won the Le Mans 24 Hours an amazing three times. They were FIA WEC Champions in 2012 and, with 10 WEC race victories to their credit, are the most successful drivers in the world championship.

A year later, Loïc Duval became world champion and in 2013 won the Le Mans 24 Hours as well. His teammate Oliver Jarvis has clinched an overall victory for Audi in the Sebring 12 Hours, plus a class victory in the Daytona 24 Hours, while Lucas Di Grassi has become integral to this driver lineup, as well as showing his from with alternative powertrains in FIA Formula E as well.

Although each driver will acknowledge the fact that the 24 Hours of Le Mans is a team effort, there is no underestimating the pressure each driver must endure in this most demanding of motor races.

While each team member plays a crucial role, these six men will sit behind the wheel of their respective cars and deal with the challenges of the race as they happen.
