No, it’s not Vivid Sydney, but a striking lighting installation for Audi in Milan during this year’s Milan Design Week.

Making a bold statement and lighting up one of Milan’s most historic buildings, a special installation by German lighting designer Ingo Maurer turned the city’s Torre Velasca into a glowing red monolith and the home of Audi’s City Lab exhibition for this year’s design week.

Audi was one of a number of internationally acclaimed brand’s that displayed their innovative technology and design prowess during the week, the impressive light show very much in keeping with the brand’s recognised leadership in the lighting field.
The Glow, Velasca, Glow! installation saw the 1950s architectural icon transformed with red lights directed at the building giving it a deep lustre as if it had been painted for the occasion.

The brand’s four interlocking rings were also displayed at intervals during the night time illumination, which was executed by lighting technician Castagna Ravelli, the Audi logo projected onto the 106 metre high tower every hour using white lasers to dramatic effect.
Italian designer Piero Lissoni was employed to renovate the ground floors of the tower and transform them to house Audi's City Lab exhibition, which included stunning installations and examples of the brand’s newest lighting applications and technology as well as some of the very latest Audi vehicles.
The all-new Audi R8, itself a design masterpiece was an obvious inclusion. Created by the design team headed by Audi’s Head of Design, Marc Lichte, it was joined by the new Audi Q2 as well as vehicles from some of Audi’s sister brands.

As well as the displays both inside and outside the tower, special design forums took place throughout the event with designers sharing their motivations and inspiration for some of their most outstanding work.

Audi’s Marc Lichte was also joined by former Audi design chief and now Director of Design for the VW Group, Walter de Silva, who numbers the classic A5 Coupe amongst his award-winning portfolio of outstanding creations. These two celebrated automotive visionaries were joined by other leading designers from other fields in what was a celebration of design and an exploration of what lies ahead.
