Although the Australian launch of the all-new Audi A4 is not until early next year, the car has already been awarded the highest ranking for its occupant and pedestrian safety features by Europe’s top safety evaluation body, Euro NCAP.

The NCAP ranking, which stands for New Car Assessment Program, is the benchmark testing program in Europe which has, since 1997, investigated the crash performance of new vehicles, subjecting them to an exacting set of tests to determine their safety in various serious accident scenarios.

Not only did the new A4 receive the maximum five star rating from Euro NCAP, but it was also awarded the ‘Euro NCAP advanced’ special award for its multicollision brake assist system which is standard equipment on all A4s, and for its optional Audi pre sense basic system.

The multicollision brake assist automatically brakes the A4 in the event of an accident, reducing the danger of skidding as well as the risk of further collisions. Audi pre sense basic tightens the seat belts in dangerous situations in the lead up to a collision and closes the windows and sunroof to afford the occupants the maximum protection in the event of an accident.

In addition to these, the new Audi A4 range boasts a raft of safety and driver assistance systems, including Audi pre sense city – an anticipatory warning and emergency braking function – which is standard across the A4 range.

At speeds of up to 85 km/h, this system checks whether there are other vehicles or pedestrians in the path of the car. If there is the risk of a collision it warns the driver according to a multi-stage concept – first visually and acoustically, then by a jolt of the brakes. Ultimately, if the driver has taken no action, it triggers an automatic emergency brake application as a last resort.

Other systems that will be included or offered within the Audi A4 range include collision avoidance assist, turn assist and the exit warning. While collision avoidance assist helps the driver to drive around an obstacle, turn assist monitors oncoming traffic when turning across the flow of traffic at low speed. In a dangerous situation, it brakes the A4 to a complete stop, if necessary, to prevent a turn when there is oncoming traffic.

The exit warning minimises the risk of injury when opening the doors. LEDs that light up red warn the occupants not to open the doors when other road users are approaching from behind.

The new Audi A4 Sedan is due for Australian release in January 2016, followed by the A4 Avant in February.
