Confirmed for Australia
Heading Down Under, the new A4 allroad quattro goes into production.
18 March, 2016
The Audi allroad name first made an appearance on the world market some 16 years ago when the ‘original’ allroad was unveiled to the automotive public. This striking Avant-styled vehicle featured the now distinctive flared wheel arches in contrasting colour to the vehicle’s body, and an unmistakably ‘muscular’ appearance.
Based on the Audi A6 Avant of the time, its additional ride height and underbody protection gave it the ability to traverse country that would compromise a more road-oriented vehicle, making it the ideal touring wagon for the Australian market and endearing it to motorists around the world.
A 2.7-litre TFSI version arrived in Australia first in 2001, followed by a TDI version which struck a chord with Australian customers, attracted by the combination of go anywhere motoring and practicality, coupled with the allroad’s stunning looks.
The addition of the A4 allroad quattro was an obvious progression for Audi and one that was instantly successful when it arrived in Australia in 2009. Appealing to traditional A4 buyers wanting that increased versatility and point of difference offered by the A4 allroad quattro, the limited edition first offering was quickly spoken for.
Now the new A4 allroad quattro has been confirmed for Australian release later this year, and although exact specification has yet to be confirmed, just a quick look at the vehicle’s potential is enough to grab the attention of existing and new allroad customers alike.
The distinctive styling remains, with the flared wheel arches in matt grey (or painted in the car’s body colour if the customer prefers). The rugged underbody protection, finished in selenite silver serves both as a styling point and provides practical protection to the vehicle’s underside, the A4 allroad quattro riding 34mm higher than a standard Audi A4 Avant. Audi also offers suspension with damper control as an alternative to the standard suspension for greater control – the driver can choose its default setting at the push of a button in Audi drive select.
A choice of engines will be available in Australia* with one TFSI and five TDI variants planned for international production. These will work with either a manual six-speed transmission, Audi’s new seven-speed S tronic or a redesigned eight-speed tiptronic, obviously working with quattro permanent all-wheel drive.
A new version of Audi drive select has been developed for the allroad, with an offroad mode added to the more familiar selections of comfort, auto, dynamic, efficiency and individual, allowing greater flexibility for when the driver heads off the black top.
As with all new Audi models, the A4 allroad quattro has been trimmed down through light weight construction dropping 12kg, but without losing its rugged construction.
Despite the allroad’s go anywhere capabilities, it remains a luxury Audi vehicle, boasting all of the refinements you would expect to find on a vehicle of this calibre and with all of the driver assistance systems and infotainment inclusions of the new A4 series available. Predictive efficiency assistant, exit warning and the adaptive cruise control Stop&Go including traffic jam assist are just some of the systems available to owners, while a new addition to the range is trailer manoeuvre assist, which uses the MMI controller to make it easier to manoeuvre a trailer.
Inside the cabin, the Audi virtual cockpit and the new MMI operating concept are available as options, as well as an extensive range of Audi connect services including the Audi smartphone interface and the Audi phone box with inductive charger. The exceptional Bang & Olufsen Sound System is also available, Audi becoming the first manufacturer to introduce 3D sound with a total of 19 speakers into the mid-sized class.
The new A4 allured quattro will add even greater depth to the new A4 range when it arrives in the third quarter this year, building on a very loyal owner base which has embraced the luxurious allroad concept since it first arrived Down Under.
