Engine of the year

Award-winning technology at the heart of performance.

24 October, 2015

If there was an Academy Awards for engine technology, this would be it – the International Engine of the Year. Voted on each year by an international panel of 64 automotive experts, ranging from motoring writers to engineers, the award is considered the most important of its kind, and for six years straight, the Audi 2.6 TFSI engine has been awarded top honours.

This year, the jury summed up the decision, saying that ‘reliable Audi quality and excellent tuning make this engine a genuine pleasure to drive’ and went to say that ‘no synthetically designed sound could replace the passionate sound of this magnificent in-line five-cylinder engine’.

This particular version of Audi’s 2.5 TFSI is the powerplant used in the awe-inspiring new RS 3 Sportback which was recently unveiled in Europe to the world’s motoring press, and the high-performance Audi RS Q3 is also powered by this award-winning engine.

Although this is the sixth consecutive year that the 2.5 TFSI has been recognised with the coveted award, it is in fact the 11th time that an engine from Audi has been voted ‘International Engine of the Year’.

Between 2005 and 2009, the Audi 2.0 TFSI dominated the 1.8 to 2.0-litre category, winning five years in a row – a feat that has now been eclipsed by the 2.5 TFSI.

Commenting on the latest award, Board Member for Technical Development, Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg said of the powerplant:

“Five-cylinder engines have a long tradition at our company. They made Audi a sporty brand back in the 1980s. The 2.5 TFSI in the new Audi RS 3 Sportback is the epitome of automotive passion with its immense torque, voracious revving abilities and a very unique sound. This award is a wonderful validation of our strategic advanced development of this engine.”

Those wanting to sample the new 2.5 TFSI in the RS 3 Sportback will have to wait until October for the compact supercar to hit our shores.
