Living with a supercar

The Audi RS e-tron as the family's daily driver.

With the RS e-tron GT, Audi has created an aspirational, all-electric supercar with head-turning looks and eye-watering performance – but how does it perform in real life on a day to day basis?

In the realm of luxury automobiles, there exists an intriguing paradox - a car that possesses the heart of a supercar while wearing the sensible shoes of an everyday vehicle. Meet the Audi RS e-tron GT, a sophisticated masterpiece that challenges the boundaries of what an electric sports car can be. With its fusion of jaw-dropping performance, avant-garde design, and everyday usability, the good folks at Audi suggested I test drive an Audi RS e-tron GT for a week. And with the kids on school holidays seeking adventure, I couldn’t think of a better way to test the tech and play taxi. It was fun-mum time.

Initially intimidating yet an absolute crowd-pleaser, the RS e-tron GT is an embodiment of Audi's commitment to innovation, blending cutting-edge electric technology with revered RS lineage. A supercar in a business suit (or perhaps a wolf in sheep's clothing) this precision-engineered machine is small enough that you almost need to contort your body to get into the sporty ‘monoposto’ cockpit, yet spacious enough inside to transport three pre-teens and a teenager (and all their holiday gear) to the waterworks, Luna Park, and eventually back to school. Fusing luxury, quality and sportiness, the interior is quite simply stunning.

From the premium leather seats to the sleek virtual cockpit, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster that provides a customisable view of essential information, including battery status and range, Audi's attention to detail is evident in every corner.

A bespoke Audi purr designed to give this electric motor an audible presence

While the infotainment system is intuitive, responsive and easy enough for the kids to navigate too, its connectivity is seamless with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, ensuring that you're always in touch with your digital life while you’re on the move. Did I mention the Bang & Olufsen premium sound system? 16 speakers and 710 watts of power ensured unbelievable musical clarity for our many car karaoke sessions.

The initial giveaway this would be a unique experience was the replacement of a thunderously loud motor usually assigned to performance vehicles with a bespoke Audi purr designed to give this electric motor an audible presence. Engineered in Audi’s sound laboratory no less, this signature sound can be adjusted via the Audi drive select system to the desired intensity. You see the clout of this car alone warrants its own sound, because underneath its elegant exterior lies two electric motors (one on each axle) that provide the drive to put this car comfortably in supercar performance territory. Audi quotes 0 to 100km/h in 3.3 seconds which puts it on a par with the famed Audi R8 supercar. And while I’m not saying that I definitely received a speeding fine (once the kids were back at school), what I can say is that 3.3 seconds  sounds about right to me.

Although it’s not just about numbers, it's about sensation and the instant torque delivery of the electric motors propelling you forward with a force that feels otherworldly.

Behind the scenes Audi engineers have honed the suspension and steering to perfection, ensuring that the car feels planted and stable in all driving conditions, and honestly, it’s a form of electronic wizardry that keeps this car composed regards of the conditions and the driving style. It’s hard not to love.

Of course, the RS e-tron GT isn't just about speed – it's about a whole new approach to motoring which includes sustainability. With electric mobility a key to more sustainable mobility worldwid, Audi has made a conscious effort to ensure this electric supercar treads as lightly as possible on the planet. Conceptualised, tested, and produced with a digital prototype, it is also produced in Audi’s Bollinger Hoffe facility which is entirely net carbon-neutral.

Naturally, charging the vehicle is an integral aspect of the lifestyle it offers, enabling you to enjoy the thrill of driving while minimising your carbon footprint too. With a battery capacity of 93 kWh, you can expect close to 400 km of real-world range on a single charge as long as you’re not constantly testing that 0 to 100km/h figure. And when it’s time to top it up, simply plug in your electric vehicle at home, by setting up a home charging system with JET Charge, or if you’re out and about Australia’s public EV charging network is growing exponentially, with Chargefox providing over 300 ultra-rapid charging plugs at more than 100 locations.

I tried the Chargefox option, and once I’d downloaded the app, I simply found an available charging port nearby

I tried the Chargefox option, and once I’d downloaded the app, I simply found an available charging port nearby. It powers up fairly quickly, so I sat in the car while it was plugged in, using the time to do an online grocery shop. Having said that, you can lock the car and hit the shops while your vehicle gains energy all while keeping an eye on your car's charging progress via the Chargefox app. Approached the right way, it can become an integral part of your day or week – something of an environmental and time saver if you will.

Despite its motorsport pedigree, the Audi RS e-tron GT makes a pretty decent case as a family car even if it’s not exactly the first choice for a family hack. Its four-door design and spacious rear seats easily accommodate multiple passengers and the ample rear legroom ensures that even taller passengers can sit comfortably, and the rear seats can easily house child safety seats. Additionally, the rear cargo space offers practicality for grocery runs and weekend getaways. Audi's commitment to safety features, including advanced driver-assistance systems, go without saying and further enhances its family-friendly credentials.

So, are we taking this vehicle out beyond a weekend’s sojourn? Absolutely. The RS e-tron GT is a car you can confidently rely on for your everyday errands and beyond. Whether you're indulging your inner speed demon or tackling the mundane tasks of daily life, this electrifying creation from Audi Sport stands ready to not only meet your every need – but add a dash of supercar glamour. It’s an adventure you (and the family) won't soon forget!
