The new Audi SQ5 TFSI arrives in Australia, bringing with it the perfect blend of poise, performance and luxury appointment. Let the fun begin.

‘You can please some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time’. So goes the famous saying, but with the arrival of the all-new Audi SQ5 TFSI, that last line doesn’t ring as true as it once did.
Let’s say you’re looking for a luxury conveyance with the very latest infotainment and connectivity? Then the SQ5 TFSI ticks the box. But you also want a vehicle with practical accommodation and the versatility of an SUV – score the SQ5 TFSI another tick. Your ideal vehicle needs to boast the performance and handling of a true sports sedan – yep, the SQ5 TFSI certainly ticks that box. How about arresting styling, economy for when you’re not taking on the mountain roads and the latest in driver assistance systems? Yes to all of those too.
The new Audi SQ5 TFSI is essentially your dream garage of vehicles all in one. It’s combination of high-performance powerplant, quattro permanent all-wheel drive and electromechanical steering making it an engaging driver’s car, while its SUV size and styling give it extraordinary practicality and accommodation. The fact that it’s an Audi guarantees an interior of the very highest standards and the automotive technology, infotainment and safety are all class leading.
The first SQ5, revealed at Le Mans in 2012, was in fact a TDI vehicle – the first TDI model to wear the coveted S badge and the fastest diesel-powered SUV in the world at the time. It was followed by the SQ5 TDI plus which further increased its performance potential. Writing in Audi Magazine Australia at the time of the original's release, motoring writer, Peter McKay, said of the SQ5 TDI:
“The SQ5 TDI is the machine that will broker peace among warring couples where dad hankers for a sports sedan and mum an SUV.”
The same is true of the new SQ5, but this new model takes the whole concept of the vehicle to new heights of performance, appointment and efficiency. The new SQ5 TFSI is 130kg lighter than its predecessor for a start – a massive saving due to composite construction materials and methods – yet structural rigidity and safety are not compromised. A new petrol powerplant has been adopted in the new model, the 3.0 V6 TFSI producing 260kW of power and a massive 500Nm of torque, available from 1370rpm right through to 4500rpm. This sees the SQ5 race from 0 to 100km/h in just 5.4 seconds on its way to a governed top speed of 250km/h, its silky-smooth eight-speed tiptronic transmission delivering lighting fast gear changes and the quattro system putting the power down through all four wheels.
Add to that electromechanical steering or the option of dynamic steering and the combination gives the SQ5 the driving dynamics of a sports sedan and will install an ear to ear grin on the face of anyone looking to push the limits and enjoy the ride – on any road surface.
Adaptive dampers soak up even the harshest road surfaces and the wheel-selective torque control ensures power to the wheels with the most traction, maximising grip in slippery and or high-speed driving. You can further refine these driving dynamics with the addition of the optional sport differential, which distributes torque between the rear wheels in tight cornering.
But the SQ5 TFSI can also deliver 8.7L/100km when you’re not feeling sporty, so economy is also high on the agenda.
But not everyone lights up at the thought of a spirited country drive – many are more attracted to a sumptuous ride, ensconced in the lap of luxury. Look no further than the SQ5.
Inside, illuminated S logos on the door sills welcome you to the superb cabin, where the sports seats are finished in fine Nappa leather with the distinctive diamond patterned stitching – and the front seats are heated for your comfort on those chilly mornings.
The layout of the cabin is generous and provides ample accommodation front and rear, with 610 litres of storage of the luggage area, or 1550 litres with the rear seats folded down.
Subtle touches abound, as does cutting-edge technology, with Audi’s MMI navigation plus with 8.3 inch screen and MMI touch providing finger-tip control (literally) of everything from suspension setting (through Audi drive select), to phoning a friend or finding a radio station.
Add to that the stunning Audi virtual cockpit, wireless hotspot in the vehicle for up to eight devices, multi-function flat-bottom steering wheel, the very cool colour ambient lighting and you have an interior that is elegant, sophisticated and brilliantly set-up for occupants.
Then there’s the equipment that comes as standard which is too extensive to list, but includes Adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go function, high bean assist and turn assist. Oh and of course LED technology is standard for all lighting functions. Park assist with surround view 360 degree cameras, auto dimming exterior mirrors, Attention assist, Audi pre-sense city with autonomous braking, Hold assist, Audi pre-sense rear, Exit warning system, Turn assist … and the list goes on.
Then there are options like the B&O stereo system, heads-up display or Audi Matrix LED headlights. Tailoring to your specific needs and lifestyle just isn’t an issue.
So the SQ5 distinguishes itself across all areas of the automotive spectrum. Handling the drudgery of city traffic with dignity, turning a twisting road into a dream drive or delivering a fine grand long-distance touring experience – and it does it all so easily. Apparently it is possibly to please all of the people all of the time, at least in terms of automotive fulfilment.
