A man known for producing scintillating finishes, Lucas di Grassi has again produced a thriller to take top spot on the podium in the Formula E race in Mexico City. Starting from 15th on the grid at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City, he had more than his fair share of troubles, including being involved in other drivers’ accidents and pitting for major repairs that dropped him to last position at one stage.

But a combination of talent and tenacity behind the wheel, and a brilliantly executed strategy by the ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport team led to a spectacular victory.

Teammate Daniel Abt also produced an inspired drive, first claiming his second Formula E pole position before being dropped back to 18th position because of a technicality. Nevertheless, Abt surged through the filed to again finish in the points in seventh position.

After the race, an ecstatic di Grassi praised his team for the  strategy and their hard work which he said resulted in the win.

“I have to say a big thank you to my team for this strategy – it was bloody good. When the safety car was deployed for the third time and I lost my advantage, I was briefly frustrated. Under normal circumstances we would have lost the race. But just like in Hong Kong: we never give up, we went to the limit on every lap. And in the end it paid off. A really fantastic win that will now be celebrated.”

“What definitely helped me were the battles behind me. And that Jérôme D'Ambrosio kept the chasing pack busy. In the end this is what tipped the balance, but without the third safety car stage we would never have needed this support.”

The next round will see the competitors of the FIA Formula E series head to Monaco on May 13th to do battle, in what is effectively di Grassi’s home race.

“Yes, the finish line is 100 metres from my front door. We will fight and see what we can do. As far as pure speed is concerned, Renault is perhaps a step ahead, but we are again in a better situation. We’ll work even harder and try to make very few or no mistakes.”
