Although for many the idea of purely electric-driven cars may still seem like a concept from the distant future, Audi is well-advanced in preparations to make series production of electric vehicles a reality.

From 2018, the company will go into large scale production of a purely electric SUV from its Brussels plant (pictured below), which is also being set-up to produce the batteries for the exciting new chapter in future mobility. This move will make Audi Brussels the exclusive production hub for battery-driven electric vehicles for Audi internationally.

This new electric SUV from Audi will be based on the Audi e-tron quattro SUV which was first shown at last year’s Frankfurt International Motor Show and fit between the existing Audi Q5 and Q7 in Audi’s production line-up.

As with the e-tron quattro concept, the new electric SUV will be driven by three electric motors and powered by a high-capacity battery with a range of more than 500 kilometres. Charging of the battery unit will be quick and efficient, and while practicality and range are obviously important considerations, Audi’s commitment to sporty and dynamic driving will be an integral part of the new vehicle’s makeup.

Currently Audi Brussels is responsible for the manufacture of the Audi A1, which will be moved to Audi’s production facility in Martorell, Spain as part of new production arrangements. The Audi Q3, currently produced in Spain will now be built in Győr, Hungary which already produces the Audi A3 Sedan, A3 Cabriolet, TT and TT Roadster.

These moves, says Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG, are designed to streamline future production and maximise efficiencies.

“The new model distribution will enhance our production efficiency and strengthen all of the sites involved,” said Mr Stadler.

“It will allow us to utilise further synergies within the Volkswagen Group and to bundle key competencies,” he said.
