Audi takes Australian GT Trophy

Audi has recorded its third Australian racing title for 2017.

McLaughlin claims GT Trophy

22 November, 2017

A great end to the racing season for Audi diver Steven McLaughlan, when he wrapped up the 2017 Australian GT Trophy Series at Goulburn's brilliant Wakefield Park.

It was a close run thing coming into the final with Steve McLaughlin and Rod Salmon locked in a battle for the title – only separated by 49 points.

The GT Trophy Series is for older race car generations, but that didn’t translate to anything but exciting racing throughout the year and an epic battle at Wakefield.

Driving the Valvoline Jamec Pem R8 LMS ultra, McLaughlin enjoyed a strong season in 2017, with four wins throughout the season. Salmon has likewise spent plenty of time at the pointy end of the field, taking top honours twice in 2017 in the Skwirk R8 LMS ultra. Their performances through the year saw the two Audi drivers at the top of the standings, well clear of their nearest competitor, Richard Gartner, well back in his Lamborghini Gallardo in third.

At Wakefield though, it was McLaughlin’s event, winning both races over the weekend to claim the title, with Salmon finishing strongly in second.

McLaughlin’s success makes it the third title for Audi in Australia this year following the successes of Geoff Emery in the Australian GT Championship and Matthew Stoupas in the Victorian State Circuit Racing Championships.

Congratulations to Steve McLaughlin and Rod Salmon on outstanding seasons.
