The fifth Audi Cup has again resulted in an absolute thriller, with debutantes, Atlético de Madrid triumphing over a powerful Liverpool side to take home the silverware.

Once again, four of football’s powerhouse sides came together over two days at Allianz Stadium in Munich to do battle for the Audi Cup which has been held every other year since its inception in 2009.

Host side Bayern Munich, which has participated in all five tournaments and won three, was once again in attendance, joined in 2017 by three teams new to the competition – Atlético de Madrid from Spain, Liverpool FC from England and SSC Napoli from Italy.

More than 123,000 football fans were treated to an amazing spectacle over the two days, with one family from Bayern enjoying a unique perspective on the game, literally living on the sidelines for the duration, thanks to a collaboration between Audi and Airbnb.

Liverpool FC and Atlético de Madrid qualified for the final thanks to a 3:0 win against FC Bayern München and 2:1 respectively against SSC Napoli. The final proved a titanic struggle, with the Spanish and English sides ultimately locked in a stalemate that had to be broken by a penalty shootout – Atlético taking the win 5:4 against Liverpool and becoming the second Spanish team to win the Audi Cup after FC Barcelona in 2011. In the game to decide third place play off game, SCC Napoli beat the three-time Audi Cup winners from Munich 2:0.
