Audi 100 C2 turns 40

The precursor to the modern Audi A6 celebrates four decades.

Audi 100 C2

A ground-breaking car in its time, the Audi 100 Series (C1 – pictured above) was first unveiled in 1966 and set the platform of prestigious luxury cars to follow from Audi. A decade later the second-generation Audi 100 (C2) captured attention with its distinctive angular styling which refined the original C1 models ad very much set the tone of the time. 

The Audi 100 C2 made its first public appearance in Luxembourg in 1976, available as a two-door Coupe a four-door Sedan. Offered with a number of different engine solutions during the model’s 12 year life, it is perhaps best remembered for the in-line five-cylinder engine which boasted a not inconsiderable 74kW. At the time, 

Elegant yet with the distinctive sporty character, the C2 furthered the company’s reputation for building large, luxurious vehicles with sharp, distinctive styling. A year later, a five-door ‘fastback’ version called the Avant was added to the vehicle line-up(pictured below), bringing even greater variety and versatility to the range. But it was the Audi 100 GL SE sedan (opening image), with its 2.2-litre, five-cylinder fuel-injected engine that really set the standard, producing 101kW (136bhp) for a top speed of 190km/h.
